Strong and brave. Loving and tender. A place to rest, where you do not feel afraid. An oasis in the midst of the daily maelstrom. A stop along the way. So are grandmothers. The least, deserves an award. In the case of the Villota wineries, this tribute has come in the form of a vineyard name. The protagonist: Genara Villota, grandmother of Carmen Pérez Garrigues (current manager of the wineries), who has named Viña Gena, the oldest parcel on the estate. This land - with tempranillo vines over 90 years old - was planted in 1930 by Ricardo Pérez Pérez (Carmen's great-grandfather) when he returned from Chile. Today, a real gem. There, in the middle of DOCa. Rioja, Villota Viña Gena Viñedo Singular is born, a red where quality prevails over quantity. Taking this into account, the yield is not very high, but it becomes a guarantee that Villota Viña Gena Viñedo Singular - made in Rioja Alavesa, in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, on the banks of the Ebro - is always classified as excellent. The superiority of Villota Viña Gena Viñedo Singular is finished off in the winery, with a one-year aging in French oak barrels complemented by aging in concrete tanks. Many in the shade. Other recognized; but all of them always at the foot of the canyon, behind each achievement and ready to lift when the fall arrives. Behind Villota Viña Gena Viñedo Singular - quite an achievement - is Genara Villota. Quite a recognition to the matriarch of this family. A tribute to all the grandmothers of the world.
Tasting note
Villota Viña Gena Viñedo Singular 2018 is a concentrated wine, made from tempranillo. Floral touches (fresh rose) and ripe fruit appear on the nose. In the mouth there is a first fruity, friendly attack, with a stimulating acidity. The tannins are balanced with other fresh and minty nuances, good volume. Clean and elegant with persistence on the palate.
